What Colloquial is

Colloquial is a free audio flashcard app for iPhone and Android that rings your phone at a time you choose, like a real call. When you answer, your flashcards play as audio: you hear the question, say the answer out loud, then hear the right one, and you rate each card by saying "got it" or "needs work". Spaced repetition decides when each card comes back. It was built for language learners first, and it works for anything you need to recall when you hear it.

How a practice call works

You pick a deck, a time and the days, and at that time the phone shows its real incoming-call screen (CallKit on iPhone, the system call screen on Android). Colloquial reads each card aloud and listens for your answer, so the whole session works with the phone in your pocket on a walk. Declining a call ends it until the next session, and calls can be paused in Settings. Cards can be recorded in your own voice, imported from a spreadsheet, or added from the library.

Why Felix built it

Felix started learning Cantonese with flashcards after moving to Hong Kong and ran into two problems. He kept forgetting to practise, and the words he did learn only worked on a screen, so when someone said one at normal speed it went straight past him. A phone call answers both problems, because an incoming call is much harder to ignore than a notification and a call is something you listen to. He built Colloquial on his own, and it has no streaks, points or leaderboards.
